Level – Beginners to Advanced

The course welcomes participants who want to develop and expand their painting practice. You will be guided through strategies drawn from Turnbull’s study at New York Studio School and Reynolds diverse field of practice, encompassing ceramics, video performance and installation. We will guide you to respond to the figure in space, learning colour mixing, composition, shapes, pictorial space, embracing slippages, chance and failure.

Materials required:

Oil paints (or acrylic paint):
Titanium White, Zinc white
Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre,
Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson,
Caput Mortem or Mars Violet,
Ultramarine Blue, Viridian,
Raw Umber, Ivory Black, Peach Black (Blue Black or Cold Black)

Brushes: A selection of hog hair brushes (rounds preferred)
Palette knife (suggestion RGM size: 13 or 23)
Disposable palette
Mediums: low toxic odourless solvent and Langridge low toxic painting medium (or linseed oil)
2 small jars with lids (for solvent & medium)
Rags or paper towel
Rubber gloves (optional)
Masking tape

Surfaces: 5 surfaces for painting, various sizes, approx. 9×12”(20x30cm). Can be primed canvas (stretched/unstretched), canvas paper, board or paper primed with gesso.

Drawing materials: Sketchbook, red and blue coloured pencils

Lucy Turnbull is a lecturer in drawing and painting at Adelaide Central School of Art. She received her Masters of Fine Art from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture (2018) and graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art with a Bachelor of Visual Art with Honours (2010). Since returning to Australia in 2019 Lucy has exhibited at Praxis Artspace, Adelaide Central Gallery and taken part in the Hill End and Sauerbier House Artist in Residence Programs. Turnbull’s interest lies in drawing from observation to record her experience of place.

Kelly Reynolds graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art with first class Honours (2017). Her field of practice encompasses video, performance, ceramics and installation. Reynolds navigates dominant and normative systems under her own terms. She is interested in objects on the edges of ownership and seeks out peripheral, queer and verge spaces. Recent exhibitions: ‘Open Book’, Adelaide Central Gallery; ‘Drawing Exchange’, Adelaide Central School of Art; ‘Riverside’, Sauerbier House. Upcoming project: ‘Tech Mate’, Adelaide Festival Centre.
