2023 Winter School

Level – Beginners to Intermediate
This 2 day drawing intensive course is designed for students who are keen to work in charcoal at a large scale on paper. The emphases will be on experimental techniques, vigorous and focussed drawing, erasure and the portrait as a human endeavour.
Materials required:
Charcoal – at least 6 sticks of Willow charcoal and 2 compressed charcoal sticks either medium or soft.
A4 or A3 pad of drawing/sketch/ink wash paper.
One large piece of paper: (at least 220gsm) can be anything you wish but it must be thick enough to endure two days of drawing, erasure and water based media and be at least 2mx1m surface area. Suggested options – 2 metres of CA Grain paper off the roll which comes in a width of 1.5 metres (cost of $20 per metre at Central Artist Supplies) or Kraft paper off the roll which comes in a width of 1.12 metres (cost of $3 per metre). Another option is to buy sheets of any size joined together with masking tape.

Cotton rags.
Any matte finish acrylic paint Gesso / house paint, a suitable brush for application and container for water.
Additional brushes for moving charcoal on paper: a large brush – 2-3 inches wide or larger.
Erasers – plastic hard.
HB graphite pencil or Medium charcoal pencil.
Access to devices for photography and printing.

Daniel Connell was awarded a PhD from the University of South Australia in 2020. His research explores portraiture as a socially engaged practice. His work has been selected for the Lester Prize, the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, Fleurieu Art Prize and the Kochi Muziris Biennale of Contemporary Art in India. He has worked on public art projects both nationally and in Birmingham, Vancouver and throughout India. Daniel has delivered a TEDX talk ‘How art teaches you to approach the unfamiliar” in Ubud in May 2018.
