2023 Winter School

Level – Beginners
This course is suitable for beginners as well as participants with some textile experience. In this course, Sera will lead participants through the basics of latch-hooking. This will involve creating a pattern, drawing up and preparing a design, preparing wool lengths, and latch-hooking itself. Participants will finish the day with a small latch-hooked sampler as well as the skills to create their own latch-hooked artworks going forward. The backing canvas and latch-hook tools will be supplied.
Materials Required:
Roll of masking tape
• Black Sharpie pen
• Pencil/Paper for drawing designs
• Cardboard (approximately an A4 amount the thickness of a packing box)
• Two pairs of scissors (one for textiles and one for cardboard)
•A selection of wool of varying thicknesses (approximately 6-8 different types and colours – second hand preferable)
Dr Sera Waters is an artist living upon Kaurna Country, Adelaide, who works predominantly with textiles. She holds a PhD from the University of South Australia and in 2006 was awarded the Ruth Tuck Scholarship to study hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework (UK). Her current research interests include repetitive crafting, Australian colonial and domestic histories, and the application of traditions for a changing future. Her 2023 solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Future Traditions, was enabled by the 2020 Guildhouse Fellowship. Sera exhibits nationally and internationally and is represented by Hugo Michell Gallery.
