2023 Winter School

Lecturers: Lucy Turnbull & Kelly Reynolds

Level – Beginners to Advanced

This course welcomes participants who want to develop and expand their drawing practice. You will be guided through strategies drawn from Turnbull’s study at New York Studio School and Reynolds diverse field of practice, encompassing ceramics, video performance and installation. We will guide you to respond to the figure in space, learning composition, shapes, scale, pictorial space, embracing slippages, chance and failure.

Materials required:

A2 newsprint pad (or 30 sheets of newsprint), 4 sheets of A1 cartridge paper, a box of willow charcoal, small tube of black & white acrylic paint (no brushes ),plastic lid for paint palette, white eraser, masking tape, cotton rag, 2 large bulldog clips and sketchbook.

Lucy Turnbull is a lecturer in drawing and painting at Adelaide Central School of Art. She received her Masters of Fine Art from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture (2018) and graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art with a Bachelor of Visual Art with Honours (2010). Since returning to Australia in 2019 Lucy has exhibited at Praxis Artspace, Adelaide Central Gallery and taken part in the Hill End and Sauerbier House Artist in Residence Programs. Turnbull’s interest lies in drawing from observation to record her experience of place.

Kelly Reynolds graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art with first class Honours (2017). Her field of practice encompasses video, performance, ceramics and installation. Reynolds navigates dominant and normative systems under her own terms. She is interested in objects on the edges of ownership and seeks out peripheral, queer and verge spaces. Recent exhibitions: ‘Open Book’, Adelaide Central Gallery; ‘Drawing Exchange’, Adelaide Central School of Art; ‘Riverside’, Sauerbier House. Upcoming project: ‘Tech Mate’, Adelaide Festival Centre.
