Wed 3 May – Wed 7 Jun  6.00pm – 9.00pm

Level – Beginners to Intermediate

This course introduces key modernist methods for developing an abstract painting from still-life observational painting techniques. The class will focus on experimenting with colour and composition in painting. Ways to Abstraction is suitable for beginner and intermediate painters.

Materials required:

Paints: This course is suitable for acrylic or oil paints. The more colours you bring, the better. Please make sure you have some white available. A suggested palette would be the following range of colours or closest match: Unbleached titanium, burnt sienna, raw umber, terre verte, ultramarine blue, vermillion, cadmium yellow mid (or other medium-warmth opaque yellow) and titanium white. Brushes and surfaces: A range of brushes, including 3 x mid-size brushes (approx. 1-1.5cm width) – imitation hog bristle, or similar. 2 – 3 sheets of oil sketch paper and 4 – 8 sheets of tracing paper or a roll of baking paper. One canvas or canvas board or extra oil sketch paper, in a size of your choosing (I recommend 40 x 50cm). Other materials: Scissors, tape, pencil, eraser, sharpener, rags, empty jars, several plastic plates or paint palette, medium (I recommend no.4 medium) and solvent if using oil paints.
