Ideally, you’ll already possess good foundational skills in colour mixing and the colour wheel. The course will introduce a range of traditional and contemporary oil painting techniques and processes, including glazing, underpainting, photographs as reference, and working with a restricted palette. Australian artist, Inès Cook, is a multi-scale oil painter who explores the fantastical worlds which spill from her dreams and imagination. Many of Cook’s artworks begin from a dream or flick of the imagination, and it is the awe inspiring, sublime feeling of these experiences which inspires her most. Through photo-edited setups, usually involving toys, she configures a reimagining of a particular spark of the imagination which can then be brought to life through painting. Cook is known for her bold use of colour and stark contrast between light and dark. Through deliberate brush strokes, Cook reinvents these narratives as a means to bring the fleeting worlds of the imagined space as close to the material world as she can. Now living and working in South Australia, Cook has obtained a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and is the recent recipient of the Praxis ARTSPACE studio and Hill-Smith Advisory Awards.
