Level – Intermediate
Explore the materials and painting techniques of Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Velazquez and Caravaggio. Students will copy an Old Master work, applying indirect painting processes such as tonal underpainting, skin tone palettes and glazing techniques. The course involves practical demonstrations as well as individual instruction and a critique of each person’s work.
Materials required:
Oil paints:
- Titanium White
- Ivory Black*
- Burnt Sienna*
- Burnt Umber*
- Raw Umber
- Cadmium Red Light
- Alizarin Crimson
- Lemon Yellow
- Yellow Ochre
- Ultramarine Blue
- Pthalo Blue.
Acrylic paint:
Brushes:
- Synthetic filbert nos 1*, 2*, 3* & 4*.
- Flat hog hair brushes nos 6* & 8*.
Medium:
- Low-Toxic Mediums (details of approved mediums to come)
- A product for cleaning brushes such as Chroma Incredible Brush Cleaner*.
Surfaces:
- 1 20”x24” stretched canvas*.
- A3 disposable palette*, palette knife*, 1 stick willow charcoal*, paper towels*, Glad Wrap (or equivalent cling film), 2 small glass jars with lids*, soft t-shirt or cotton rags*.
*Asterisk indicates the materials that will be required for the first class.

Melanie Brown completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) in 2008 at Adelaide Central School of Art, having been awarded several scholarships and the Alumni Award. She has won awards including the Clifton’s Art Prize in 2008, the Loreto Star Portrait Prize in 2013 and the Kennedy Art Prize People’s Choice Award for 2015. Melanie has an extensive exhibition history in addition to lecturing at Adelaide Central School of Art. Melanie has received corporate and private commissions for her paintings both locally and overseas.
