In the tradition of atelier painting, this course explores the materials and painting techniques of Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Velazquez, and Caravaggio. Working from a selection of images of Old Master paintings, students will recreate a copy painting applying indirect painting processes including drawing up proportionally, tonal underpainting, skin tone palettes, chiaroscuro, sfumato and glazing techniques.

The course involves practical demonstrations as well as individual instruction and a critique of each person’s work. Learn to master the classical techniques and principles of portraiture or still life passed down through the centuries. Suitable for all who want to broaden their skill set, refresh fundamentals, or just try out painting in the style of the Old Masters!
