In this Masterclass, students will explore a range of contemporary approaches to abstract painting. Participants will learn how to navigate their way through the compositional process to create a resolved abstract painting. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the rich language of abstraction from the historical modes of Gesture, Geometry and the Biomorphic, through to the new elements and hybrid forms of Contemporary Abstraction. Students will be working on multiple paintings each day taking an experimental approach to the materials and processes of painting, working towards a minimum of one resolved painting each day.

To describe Christian Lock’s work as painting does not quite encompass the nature of his practice. He works with painting, interrogating its components and parts, examining their roles and possibilities before pulling them back together in the final object. Sampling and repurposing a diverse range of forms, motifs and strategies from Modernism, the industrial processes and materiality of minimalism and the hybrid language of Post Modernism and Pop Culture. The work becomes a ‘remix’; creating new tracks from fragments of old songs, full of quiet nods to the history of painting whilst exploring its possibilities and suggesting its potential future.
