Prior knowledge of working in oils is required for this course.

This course is suitable for intermediate painters who have completed Introduction to Oil Painting Part I and have a sound understanding of colour mixing. Students will work from their own photographic reference to complete a realistic self-portrait employing an indirect (layered) painting approach. The course includes instruction on mixing skin tones, preparation of the ground and underpainting, and building the surface through successive layers. As well as practical demonstrations and individual instruction, Rebecca will share the development of her own portrait, working at the same pace as students.


Portrait Brief

Students are encouraged to paint a self-portrait, in preference to a portrait of a friend or family member, as this reduces the pressure to create a flattering likeness. Even though a self-portrait is very personal, students tend to approach their painting with greater objectivity, and willingness to take risks. This ultimately enhances learning, and a more successful portrait.

Participants are required to bring along a selection of portrait photographs for consideration. These should clearly depict the head and shoulders and showing contrasting tonal values; a varied mix of light and shaded areas around the face. Photographs which show detail in the shadowed areas, but which are not too exposed in the lighter areas will be suitable. Blurry photographs will not be suitable.

On enrolling, students will receive a more detailed brief to assist in taking and selecting their photographs. Students unable to arrange a high-quality photograph will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of suitable images provided.


Materials required:

Self- Portrait Photograph

  • 1 A4 high quality colour photogra* ph


Oil Paint

  • Raw Umber*
  • Titanium White
  • Ivory Black
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Cadmium Red
  • Alizarin Permanent
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium
  • Lemon Yellow

Nice to have: Langridge Cadmium Orange, Sennelier French Vermillion, Michael Harding Quinacridone Rose (as substitute for Alizarin Permanent)



  • A selection of round synthetic bristle brushes sizes 0-5
  • A range of soft and bristle brushes; Flat or Bright sizes 2 – 10*
  • At least one Filbert synthetic bristle brush in a size 4 or 6.

(An approximation of these brush sizes will be suitable.)


In addition to these materials students are encouraged to bring along any special colours or brushes they already have.



  • Odourless solvent 500mls (Langridge Low Toxic Solvent or Langridge Solvent 75 recommended)*
  • Langridge Low Toxic Underpainting Medium 100 ml
  • Langridge Low Toxic Painting Medium 100 ml



  • 1 sheet A3 oil sketch/canvas paper
  • One 16”x 20” (40 x 50cm) stretched canvas*



  • A3 disposable palette
  • A small-medium palette knife
  • 2 Small jars with lids*
  • 1 ball-point biro*
  • A5 Art Journal*\
  • Cotton rags and paper towels*
  • Glad Wrap (or equivalent cling film)
  • 3 or 4 Jar or milk bottle lids (washed)
  • 1 sheet of fine/medium sandpaper*
  • Masking tape*
  • 1 sheet A3 tracing paper*

Rebecca Hastings is a mid-career artist, and Adelaide Central School of Art’s current Artist in Residence. Hastings holds a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) and a Master of Visual Art (Research). Awards and grants include Art SA Project grants, and a UniSA Graduate Research Travel and Research Support Scholarship enabling a research residency in Japan in 2017. Her work has been shortlisted for the BP Portrait Prize 2015 (National Portrait Gallery, London), and a Finalist in a range of significant art prizes, including the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize (2021), the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award (2012), the Sulman prize (2014 and 2015), and the Archibald prize (2014). Hastings has exhibited widely, with work held in collections nationally and internationally. Hastings is represented by Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne
