Modelling a Clay Head from Life

Level – Beginner onwards

This two-day intensive will teach the basics of clay portraiture. Working from a life model, students will learn how to build up clay using a ‘general to specific’ method to create a bust. Participants will be able to take their busts home after the course.


  • 1 bag of terracotta clay
  • 2 x clay modelling tools
  • 1 kitchen knife
  • 1 bin liner or large plastic bag
  • 2 x Mdf boards approx. 50cm x 60cm (or equivalent) to transport head home


  • Students will need to bring along an apron.
  • Please wear covered shoes.

All other materials will be supplied.


Caitlin Bowe is an early career artist based in Kaurna Country, Adelaide, South Australia. Working in the field of sculpture, Bowe utilises casting and textile techniques to explore themes of ancestral mythology, the gothic Victorian, and funerary arts. Bowe’s works look to retell lived experiences through Celtic and English mythologies, forming connections to these larger cultural narratives.
