2024 Summer School

This 5 day course that introduces a complete beginner to the essential principles and practices of oil painting. It is also suited to participants that have want to revisit the fundamentals of Oil painting. The course includes instruction on materials, methods of paint application and insights into key elements of tone and colour. In a supportive atmosphere participants will make a tonal study, start a colour wheel and paint two simple still life arrangements.


Materials required:


Oil paints:

  • Titanium White
  • Ivory Black
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium Yellow Mid/Medium
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue



  • Flat or Bright stiff synthetic bristle brushes sizes 2, 4, 6, 8.
  • At least one Filbert stiff synthetic brush in a size 4 or 6.
    (An approximation of these brush sizes will be acceptable. Stiff synthetic are best i.e. NEEF 95 range, but hogs bristle or other budget brushes suitable for oils are okay)


Oil Painting Medium(s):

  • Odourless solvent 500mls (Gamsol or Langridge Solvent 75 recommended 125ml).
  • A solvent-free medium (details of approved mediums to come)



  • 2 sheets A3 oil sketch/canvas paper (a larger sheet cut to size is also acceptable).
  • One 16”x20” (40x50cm) and 1@ 14 x 18” (30x40cm) canvas boards.


Other materials:

  • Chroma Incredible Brush Cleaner 250mls (or a similar brush soap for cleaning and conditioning brushes).
  • A3 disposable palette.
  • A small-medium palette knife.
  • 2 small-medium glass jars with lids.
  • A HB graphite pencil.
  • 1 stick willow charcoal.
  • Paper towel and/or soft t-shirt or cotton rags
  • Glad Wrap (or equivalent cling film).

Melanie Brown completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) in 2008 at Adelaide Central School of Art, having been awarded several scholarships and the Alumni Award. She has won awards including the Clifton’s Art Prize in 2008, the Loreto Star Portrait Prize in 2013 and the Kennedy Art Prize People’s Choice Award for 2015. Melanie has an extensive exhibition history in addition to lecturing at Adelaide Central School of Art. Melanie has received corporate and private commissions for her paintings both locally and overseas.
