Level – Beginners

This course introduces a complete beginner to the essential principles and practices of oil painting. It is also suited to participants that have completed Oil Painting Fundamentals previously, as different techniques will be covered. The course includes instruction on materials, methods of paint application and insights into key elements of tone and colour. In a supportive atmosphere participants will make a tonal study, start a colour wheel and paint two simple still life arrangements.

 

Materials required:
Oil paints:
  • Titanium White*
  • Ivory Black*
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cadmium Yellow Med
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Phthalo Blue
Brushes:
  • Flat or Bright stiff synthetic bristle brushes sizes 2, 4, 6, 8. *
  • At least one Filbert stiff synthetic bristle brush in a size 4 or 6. *
(An approximation of these brush sizes will be acceptable.)
Oil Painting Medium(s):
  • Odourless solvent 500mls* (Gamsol or Langridge Solvent 75 recommended. Artist grade odourless solvents only please; no turpentine or common hardware solvents are permitted in the classroom).
  • Gamblin’s Galkyd Gel – Optional, to be discussed in class.
Supports:
  • 1-2 sheets A3 oil sketch/canvas paper (a larger sheet cut to size is also acceptable).*
  • One 16”x20” (40x50cm) and two 12”x16” (30x40cm) canvas boards.
Other:
  • A3 disposable palette.*
  • A small-medium palette knife. *
  • 2 small-medium glass jars with lids. *
  • A HB graphite pencil.
  • Paper towel and/or soft t-shirt or cotton rags*

Rebecca Hastings  is a mid-career South Australian artist working from her home studio in the Adelaide Hills. Hastings holds a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) and a Master of Visual Art (Research). Awards and grants include Art SA Project grants, and a UniSA Graduate Research Travel and Research Support Scholarship enabling a research residency in Japan in 2017. Her work has been shortlisted for the BP Portrait Prize 2015 (National Portrait Gallery, London), and a Finalist in a range of significant art prizes, including the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize (2021), the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award (2012), the Sulman prize (2014 and 2015), and the Archibald prize (2014). Hastings is represented by Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne.
