Level – Beginners
This course introduces a complete beginner to the essential principles and practices of oil painting. It is also suited to participants that have completed Oil Painting Fundamentals previously, as different techniques will be covered. The course includes instruction on materials, methods of paint application and insights into key elements of tone and colour. In a supportive atmosphere participants will make a tonal study, start a colour wheel and paint two simple still life arrangements.
Materials required:
Oil paints: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Mid, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue.
Brushes: Flat or Bright synthetic bristle brushes sizes 2, 4, 6, 8 (or close enough to these sizes, the numbering can differ between brush ranges slightly). At least one Filbert synthetic bristle brush in a size 4 or 6.
Oil Painting Medium(s): Art Spectrum Painting medium No 2 (or equivalent), Odourless solvent (Gamsol or Langridge Solvent 75 recommended) and a medium with fast drying properties such as Art Spectrum Liquol (Medium no. 4) or Winsor & Newton Liquin.
Supports: 2 sheets A3 oil sketch/canvas paper (larger sheet(s) cut to size is also acceptable. Two 14”x18” and one 16”x20” canvas board.
Other: Chroma Incredible Brush Cleaner or a similar brush soap for cleaning brushes. A3 disposable palette, a small-medium palette knife, 1 stick willow charcoal, paper towel, Glad Wrap (or equivalent cling film), 2 small-medium glass jars with lids, soft t-shirt or cotton rags.

Seirian Kitchener is an early career artist working on Kaurna Land, Adelaide, South Australia. She graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art in 2015 with a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours).
Kitchener’s practice embraces traditional oil painting, and while this pursues a high level of technical skill in classical realism, her paintings seek to push beyond tradition into contemporary methods and concepts. She uses self-portraiture to explore internal experiences and how these reflect the world around her. Her self-portraits quietly observe themes in her own life that may, in turn, reveal collective tensions currently at play.
Seirian Kitchener has been actively exhibiting within South Australia since graduating in 2015 and currently works out of praxis ARTSPACE Studios in Bowden.
