Level – Beginner to Intermediate
This course will lead from introductory watercolour techniques and processes towards experimentation with surfaces, effects and mixed media. We will paint from life, photographs, and our imagination exploring a wide range of subject matter. Designed to encourage students to loosen up and gain confidence while developing skills in watercolour, the course caters for beginners to intermediate levels of experience. Students will complete a range of experiments and finished paintings during classes.
Materials required:
Watercolour paints: A warm and cool of each primary colour. Ie. Ultramarine blue (warm blue), Pthalo or Prussian blue (cool dark blue), Alizarin Crimson (cool red), Cadmium Hue or Vermillion (or alternative warm red), Lemon or Hansa Yellow (or alternative cool yellow), Yellow Deep (or similar warm yellow), Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre. A pot of gesso for priming.
Brushes: Round soft watercolour brushes (natural or synthetic) size no. 2, 6 & 10. Round bristle brush size no. 8. Gesso brush for priming (any cheap flat house paint brush is fine) 1- 3 inches wide. (Other brush options will be discussed in the first class.)
Surfaces: A4 visual art diary (for notes & experimentation, paper that holds a light wash recommended). A1 cartridge paper (2-3 sheets per class). A3, A2 or A1 watercolour paper, any kind. 200gsm (or thicker) is recommended (2 sheets per class). (Other surfaces may be discussed in the first class.)
Tools & other materials : Palette – a white saucer, tile, or shells such as oyster shells work well. Water pot/jar, Extra pot for making washes in quantity, Soft rags x 2, 1 x stick of white pastel/crayon (any kind). 2-3 sticks willow charcoal (medium thickness). Craft glue or glue stick. 2 soft rags, 2B pencil, sharpener, eraser, scissors, and a ruler.

Fran Callen has taught drawing and painting for over fourteen years, including South Australian School of Art, Tauondi Aboriginal College and Adelaide College of the Arts. Prolifically exhibiting for over twenty years, her studio practise currently explores connections between motherhood, drawing and natural history. Awards include the 2003 Ruth Tuck Scholarship, Helpmann Academy’s Cultural Exchange to New Delhi in 2007 and the Fleurieu Food & Wine Art Prize 2016. Fran’s Guildhouse Limber Up mentorship with Christopher Orchard led to representation with BMG, with solo exhibitions in 2017 and – supported by the Ed Tweddell Studio Residency at Central Studios – in SALA 2018. Her botanical inspired FUMA Collections Project work in 2017 was exhibited in SALA and FRANFest. She was curated by Gabi Lane into ‘Good Mother’ at Central School of Art, SALA 2018, this artwork shortlisted in STILL National Still Life Award 2019, and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing 2020. Work responding to her 2019 Country Arts residency to Adnyamathanha country was exhibited at Yarta Purtli Cultural Centre, Port Augusta 2020, and Hahndorf Academy SALA 2021. Recent exhibitions include SALA award winning ‘Nature and Consciousness’ curated by Sarah Northcott at Main Gallery 2022, the Waterhouse Prize and the Heysen Prize 2022. Fran works between her kitchen table and Collective Haunt Studios.
