Join artist Fran Callen, as she takes you through experimental drawing techniques, leading into play and exploration with collage and found and recycled materials. Take inspiration from Fran’s Just Add Water body of work to create your own artworks on recycled packaging. Beginning with exercises designed to help loosen up and gain confidence, you will be guided towards play with natural and domestic pigments commonly found in your homes and backyards. Feel free to bring some of your own – such as turmeric, charcoal, tea, coffee, sand, leaves or beetroot juice…along with some recycled packaging, preferably paper or cardboard!

 

Materials list:

  • Black drawing pens (eg felt tip, gel, ball point)
  • Graphite pencil 2B – 6B
  • Ruler
  • Glue stick and/or craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Brush for washes
  • 1 tube cheap white acrylic (optional)
  • 1 pot of gesso (optional)
  • Nature related imagery for collaging (optional)
  • Recycled cardboard packets, unfolded (eg cereal/food packaging, spares will be provided)
  • Natural and domestic pigments/materials of choice eg tea, instant coffee, beetroot, old red wine, turmeric, dirt, leaves, eucalyptus sap, ash, charcoal,
  • Salt, sand etc (bring what you can – we will share and some will be provided)
  • Botanical/organic subject matter of choice (eg leaves, seed pods, bones)

 

Other drawing or watercolour materials of choice (optional)

Homemade ink of choice (optional) – recipe provided upon enrolment

Fran Callen created Just Add Water in response to her 2019 Country Arts residency to Grindell’s Hut on Adnyamathanha country, Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park, SA. The complete body of work has been exhibited at Yarta Purtli Cultural Centre in Port Augusta and Collective Haunt in SALA 2020, and at Hahndorf Academy in SALA 2021. Fran exhibits prolifically. Her work is regularly shortlisted in national art prizes, recently including the Waterhouse Science Art Prize in 2022, Tatiara, Center of Creative Health and Heysen Art Prizes in 2022 and the Paul Guest Prize for Drawing 2019. She currently works from her studio in Adelaide and teaches at Adelaide College of the Arts, University of South Australia and Adelaide Central School of Art.
