Lecturer: Jess Mara
Mon 20 Feb – Mon 3 Apr 6.00pm – 9.00pm (Please note: no class on Mon 13 March – Adelaide Cup public holiday)
Level – Intermediate
This course is designed for participants who have completed Drawing Fundamentals or have an equivalent level of basic drawing experience. Building on core drawing skills and techniques, participants will further develop their understanding of observational realism. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises using a range of media and techniques to capture their subjects.
Materials required:
2 sheets A1 Cartridge paper, 3 sticks of willow charcoal (thin and medium), a charcoal pencil (medium), 1 sheet Mid Tone Grey Canson paper, 1 stick white conte, a cotton rag, plastic eraser, HB pencil, black drawing ink, pen and nib set, 1 Neef Taklon no.2 round, 1 Neef Taklon size ½ inch flat, 1 large sheet of watercolour paper OR 1 x A1 sheet of CA Grain Canson paper, ice cube tray OR 4 small containers, 1 glass jar.
For the first week please bring: Willow Charcoal, charcoal pencil, 1 sheet of A1 cartridge paper, measuring stick, eraser, HB graphite pencil and a rag.

Jess Mara is an Adelaide based painter. She received her Bachelor of Visual Art (honours) in 2006 from Adelaide Central School of Art and has been actively exhibiting since. Selected solo exhibitions including Bundle, (Praxis ART Space 2021), These Four Walls, (Floating Goose Studios Inc 2018) and Some Place Near, (Hill Smith Gallery, 2013). Jess has been a finalist in numerous competitions/awards notably, The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award at Bega Valley Regional Gallery in 2018. She was the Winner of the People’s Choice Award at the 2019 Kennedy Art Prize for her painting Embrace (Self Portrait with son).
Jess has been lecturing in the BVA and Short Course Programs at Adelaide Central School of Art since 2011. She teaches in both the drawing and painting departments. She has also presented workshops for VAESA (Visual Arts Educators in South Australia) and completed a residency/ hosted workshops in Schools.
