Adelaide Central School of Art is delighted to present Shedding, a new solo exhibition by 2023 SALA feature artist Helen Fuller. This esoteric survey show has been staged to coincide with the publication of a new monograph dedicated to the artist’s prolific, multifaceted practice. Please join us for the opening of Shedding and the launch of Helen Fuller by Ross Wolfe, Sasha Grbich, and Glenn Barkley, published by Wakefield Press.
Defying typical gallery display conventions, Shedding seeks to evoke the dense, overlapping visual aesthetic of Fuller’s own studio environment. In this, the exhibition responds to Fuller’s 1995 installation work at UniSA Art Museum, BCF, in which the artist unpacked, sorted and displayed the contents of her recently deceased father’s workshop. The lifelong propensity for keeping a shed, a place of quiet, deeply personal industry, is seemingly hereditary, a shared trait between Fuller and her father. The title of the show suggests a new verb for this type of behaviour, while implying an alternative meaning of attempting to divest oneself.
Shedding draws work from multiple periods of Fuller’s varied career, juxtaposing sophisticated inventive ceramic work alongside intricate paintings and affecting textile pieces. This is an exhibition of a master artist.
