Bernadette Klavins, Michael Schaefer, Timmi Tsapaliaris, Luke Wilcox
Four Points at Adelaide Central Gallery from 13 June – 14 July features new digital works from recent graduates of the School: Bernadette Klavins, Michael Schaefer, Timmi Tsapaliaris and Luke Wilcox. These emerging artists have each been commissioned to make a video performance work for this exhibition.
Each work addresses certain fundamental human needs for survival, including air, nutrients, energy, sunlight, sleep and water. These basic living essentials have been assigned to a compass point – the compass important for its consideration as an ancient, undeviating and universal survival tool that navigates and guides humans through their environment.
The artists have been assigned a direction and need: West + water; North + nutrients; East + energy;
South + sleep. Their works will project onto the corresponding directional walls of the Gallery.
In her work, Trailing water, Klavins contemplates the future presence of water upon the landscape, as the boundaries of bodies of water threaten to become increasingly unfixed within the next century.
Schaefer’s work will investigate the resultant physical outcomes of an insomnolent seventy-two hour period, drawing on environmental cues that reset circadian rhythms (called ‘zeitgebers’), which are normally regulated by the light-dark cycle each day.
The works by Tsapiliaris and Wilcox will respond, respectively, to energy and nutrients.
“Each year the Gallery program includes at least one exhibition featuring recent graduates of the School,” says Project Manager – Exhibitions, James Edwards. “It is motivational and inspiring for the School’s current students to see the work of their near-peers on display in a professional gallery setting, and it’s also another way that we provide support to alumni who are commencing their careers.”
